Nike

The largest athletic footwear company in the world. Beaverton, Oregon. Began as a distributor of Japanese running shoes — contract manufacturing was the founding model, not a departure from one.

Ownership

Public (NYSE: NKE) with founder-family control: Knight family Class A shares, held via Swoosh LLC since 2015, elect 75% of the board. Founded 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman; Nike name 1971; IPO December 1980. Elliott Hill became President & CEO October 2024.

Why Watchlist

Has never owned a factory — the scrappy-outsider model of 1964 that the whole industry later converged on. Not sourcing churn: contractor relationships are long-standing and concentrated (four make ~59% of footwear). But 96% of footwear comes from three countries, the brand controls none of the buildings, and quality is a specification honored eleven time zones away. Watchlist as the category default: design retained, manufacturing rented.

Reversibility

What would change our verdict

Meaningful manufacturing ownership or disclosed long-term purchase commitments (upgrade review). Documented construction decline on a stable model, or churn language appearing in the 10-K (downgrade review).
