Ownership
Founded 1947 in Annecy, France by François Salomon as a small ski-edge workshop. Acquired by Adidas in 1997 forming Adidas-Salomon AG. Adidas divested to Amer Sports in 2005 for €485 million. Amer Sports was taken private in March 2019 by the Mascot Bidco consortium (Anta Sports, FountainVest Partners, Anamered Investments, Tencent) at €40 per share, valuing Amer at approximately €4.6 billion. Amer Sports re-listed on the NYSE in February 2024 (ticker AS), raising approximately $1.37 billion at a $6.5 billion valuation. Anta and the consortium retain majority voting power post-IPO; reported holdings at late 2024 were Anta Sports ~44.5%, Anamered Investments 16.3%, FountainVest 12.7%, Tencent 4.5%. Salomon revenue passed approximately $1.0 billion in 2023-2024. Guillaume Meyzenq became Salomon CEO January 1, 2025. Salomon plans to open 290 shops in China during 2026.
Why Watchlist
Design and product development continue out of Annecy with no documented quality decline among the core technical user base. The concentration of ownership under an Anta-led consortium and the China DTC expansion (290 stores in 2026) are meaningful strategic shifts that warrant ongoing monitoring even as product reputation holds.
Reversibility
What would change our verdict
Documented relocation of Salomon design or engineering away from Annecy; sustained reports of quality decline from professional trail runners, ski racers, or alpinists; reduction in supply chain or country-of-origin transparency.
