Ownership
Bankrupt June 2010; Ideal Industries bought the assets that August and moved production back to the US. Ideal sold SK to Hangzhou GreatStar (Chinese tool conglomerate; also owns Shop-Vac, Arrow Fastener, Pony Jorgensen, and the Duratech line) in a deal completed 2021-06-30 and announced that October. SK Tools USA now operates as a sister company of Shop-Vac under GreatStar Industrial USA.
Why Former Great
Under GreatStar there is no in-house manufacturing; most of the lineup is imported from China/Taiwan and overlaps GreatStar's own Duratech catalog, with SK customer service putting US-made at chrome sockets, specialty bits, and some pliers, much of that via third-party shops. Post-sale quality complaints (broaching, fit) are consistent across owner communities. Buy the old stock; the name no longer points at the company that earned it.
Reversibility
What would change our verdict
Meaningful return of in-house US manufacturing; per-line country-of-origin disclosure; a multi-year quality record under GreatStar that matches the Ideal era.
