Ownership
Founded 2015 in Utah by Tony Pearce and Terry Pearce. IPO'd in 2018 via SPAC merger (NASDAQ: PRPL). Stock declined substantially through 2023-2024. Coliseum Capital, which had been Purple's largest shareholder, took the company private in a multi-step transaction completed in 2024-2025.
Why Avoid
Another DTC consolidation case: VC growth → SPAC IPO → PE take-private. Founder-led era is over. Synthetic-polymer construction is structurally similar to memory foam in terms of materials category.
Reversibility
What would change our verdict
Founder buyback (Pearce family attempted to re-acquire before Coliseum take-private; rejected). Re-IPO with employee ownership structure (unlikely).
