Ownership

Owned by Bedrock Manufacturing, Tom Kartsotis's holding company, which also owns Filson and raised about $286M from investors in 2015 to 2018 per its SEC Form D filings. Bedrock's CEO since June 2024 is Steven Katzman. Shinola itself has had no CEO since July 2022. | Kartsotis founded Fossil and was its CEO from 1984 to 2000, and bought the rights to the Shinola name in 2011 (Adweek, 2015).

Why Avoid

Shinola calls itself "The American Watchmaker" and puts copy about its Detroit watch factory on product pages that give no country of origin. On 31 Oct 2026, 514 of its 558 product pages named no country. Every leather and jewelry page checked carries the line "our factory stands as the first U.S. watch factory of its size in over 50 years", and 211 of its 238 leather product codes end in VNM, the code for Vietnam. Its 14-inch wall clocks are described as "built in the United States with U.S. and imported parts", while 13 of its 14 clocks carry product codes ending in CHN. In 2016 FTC staff closed an inquiry into its US-origin claims after Shinola agreed to drop "Where American is Made" and qualify other claims. Detroit assembles quartz movements from Swiss parts, cases watches and sews leather straps.

Reversibility

What would change our verdict

Every product page states country of origin, including leather goods and clocks. Detroit takes on manufacture of components (cases, dials) rather than assembly alone.
