Ownership

Arthur Benjamin Sugarman (born Brighton, naturalized US citizen who returned to England) established a shirt factory at 21 Bedford Square in Brighton in 1963. Sugarman sold the business in 1975. A 1993 management buyout backed by 3i acquired the brand from Northern Ireland-based Dunkeld Group (in receivership) for 4 million pounds. A second 3i-backed management buyout in 2000 created Ben Sherman PLC. Oxford Industries acquired Ben Sherman for 80 million pounds (then $146 million) in mid-2004 from 3i and Enterprise Equity. Marquee Brands acquired the brand from Oxford Industries on July 20, 2015, for 40.8 million pounds ($63.5 million); UK operations were licensed to The Baird Group (BMB Clothing). This was Marquee's second acquisition (after Bruno Magli).

Why Avoid

Six ownership changes since 1975. Now under a brand licensing firm that operates the same model for BCBG, Bruno Magli, Body Glove, Stance, Laura Ashley, and Dakine. UK operations are licensed out separately, which is the standard pattern that produces the bifurcated quality (premium tier vs. mass tier) called out in the WOP essay.

Reversibility

What would change our verdict
