Ownership

Jeff Kearl, John Wilson, Aaron Hennings, Taylor Shupe, and Ryan Kingman co-founded Stance in 2009 in San Clemente, California. The brand reached over $100 million in annual sales at its peak. Co-founder Shupe departed in 2018 to found knitting manufacturer FutureStitch and tried to buy Stance back from prior ownership last year (proposal rejected). Kearl was CEO until 2020 and chairman until 2024. Marquee Brands acquired Stance on November 19, 2025 (terms undisclosed), bringing total Marquee portfolio retail sales to $4.5 billion. Marquee announced United Legwear & Apparel Co. (ULAC) as the core global licensee outside China at the same time. Marquee is closing Stance namesake stores at Irvine Spectrum, San Clemente Outlets, and Disney Springs Florida; mass employee layoffs followed the acquisition.

Why Avoid

Direct competitor to Approved brands Darn Tough, Point6, and Smartwool (now Former Great). Marquee acquisition followed by immediate licensing handoff to ULAC (which also handles Puma socks) plus closure of Stance's own stores plus mass layoffs is the classic ABG-style pattern: the people who made the brand worth buying are the first cost line cut.

Reversibility

What would change our verdict

Clear retention of core fabric R&D and design talent under ULAC, plus continued partnerships with named athletes and artists at the level Stance achieved pre-acquisition.
