Ownership

Acquired by VF Corporation in 1986 when VF bought Blue Bell for $762M. VF subsequently acquired The North Face, Eastpak, Kipling, and Eagle Creek, consolidating an estimated 55% of the US backpack market. In 2023, VF announced it was exploring 'strategic alternatives' for the remaining backpack division.

Why Former Great

Denier counts dropped. YKK zippers swapped for generic. Stitch density reduced. Lifetime warranty rewritten to exclude 'normal wear and tear' and effectively unusable for the exact failure modes the product is now engineered to have.
