Ownership
Designer Isaac Mizrahi launched his label in 1987. Xcel Brands acquired the brand in 2011 for $31.5 million. WHP Global acquired a controlling 70% interest from Xcel on May 31, 2022, in a transaction valued at $68 million ($46.2 million cash to Xcel). Xcel retains a 30% minority stake, manages the QVC business under a services agreement with WHP, and holds a separate license to design and distribute Isaac Mizrahi apparel in the US and Canada. Mizrahi continues as Chief Design Officer.
Why Avoid
A textbook nested licensing structure: WHP owns the IP majority, Xcel manages a subset (QVC) under services agreement, and Xcel separately licenses apparel design back from WHP. Roughly 50 licensees overall. The brand exists primarily as a QVC sales engine.
